The Inclusive Leadership Handbook – Theoretical framework

A goal of leadership is to create change and shape the future, and inclusive leadership is no exception to this. Going further beyond this, inclusive leadership focuses on the shared development of a vision, anencompassing appreciation of oneself and one’s environment and building and caring for relationships, as well as the continuous development of one’s own character.

To summarise, inclusive leadership can be described in the following way:

The aim of inclusive leadership is to create, change and innovate whilst balancing everybody’s needs.

Inclusive leadership means having the courage to take conscious steps to break down barriers for people at risk of being excluded from society.

Inclusive leaders embody a leadership approach that appreciates diversity, invites and welcomes everyone’s individual contribution, and encourages full engagement with the processes of decision-making and shaping reality.

The inclusive leadership approach is based on the four development areas:

  • Practicing self-awareness,
  • Living a shared vision,
  • Building relationships and
  • Creating change.

These four development areas each contain an ongoing process in which inclusive leaders can develop gradually. All four areas are interconnected and exert an influence on each other.
